Matsuri
The festival was all bustling and filled with people. It was one of the rare times during where the usually quiet and serene town becomes quite crowded and busy.
“Look, they have goldfish-scooping over there,” Tsukiko pointed into the direction of a crowded stall with a smile as she turned towards her childhood friends, which of course, includes Yoh. He had just returned from France not too long ago, though he didn’t manage to keep his promise of perfecting all the recipes.
It has been a year since then. And during the beginning of this summer, Yoh returned back to Japan unexpectedly. It was a big surprise for all of them, but nevertheless, a pleasant one, even though it was only going to be a short stay.
“Speaking of which, Yoh, have you tried goldfish-scooping before?” Suzuya asked, since this is the first time Yoh had came with them to a festival. Yoh only shook his head slightly, before he too, looked towards the stall.
Yoh shook his head slightly, before telling them how he never had the chance to visit festivals like this. “I would love to try it though! But I may need some help…” Yoh said with a sheepish grin, before glancing towards Tsukiko, as though trying to hint something. Even though Yoh knows about Tsukiko and Suzuya’s relationship, he was still the same as before, always trying to get her attention.
Tsukiko didn’t seem to understand his hint, but still, she was more than willing to teach him. But just as she was about to volunteer herself, Suzuya cut into the conversation.
With a subtle smile, he suggested, “You should really get Kanata to teach you, he’s good at goldfish-scooping…” Though Suzuya could just leave it like that, he didn’t, and instead added another remark, “… but I’m sure Yoh will be able pick the skill up easily.”
Understanding what Yoh meant, Kanata was about to start with his sarcastic remarks, but after Suzuya had finished speaking, he forgot about it and started shaking his head with a smug grin. “Hah, no one can beat me when it comes to goldfish scooping!” Kanata declared with a proud tone, before he glanced towards Yoh.
“Oi, Yoh, if you can ask me nicely, I might consider teaching you.” Kanata tilted his chin upwards and folded his arms across his chest in a proud manner.
With a roll of his eyes, Yoh simply ignored what Kanata said, and asked if that brain of his had remembered things wrongly, since it was never really working in the first place. And with that, they started their usual bickering. Both Suzuya and Tsukiko let out a soft sigh, watching as Kanata challenged Yoh to a goldfish-scooping duel. Not wanting to lose to him, Yoh accepted the challenge and the both of them made their way towards the stall. But that was one thing that kind of bothered her.
Just as Tsukiko was about to follow after them, she felt someone catching hold of her hand, and started to tug her away - further away from the direction Yoh and Kanata went into.
“Su- Suzuya?” Surprised , Tsukiko could only follow blindly after him. As they weaved through the crowd, Tsukiko could notice that the people were getting lesser as they walked towards a more secluded area. It was when they had arrived, did she realised where they were.
When Suzuya found a nice spot, he sat down, before urging her to do the same as well. Tsukiko gave him a small nod of her head, as she sat down right next to him on the grass. It was a place the three of them would always go, whenever the fireworks festival were on. It was a nice, quiet spot without much people around since it’s quite a distance away from the main venue of the festival itself.
After they had settled down, Tsukiko finally had the chance to voice out her question. When she turned to look at Suzuya, she found that he was staring at her. She stared right back into his eyes for a moment, before she turned away in embarrassment. Looking down at her lap, it wasn’t until she felt a gentle, brushing movement against her hair that she looked up.
“I’ve always thought that it’ll look good on you,” Suzuya said, smiling as he continued to stare at her. Confused, she reached up to touch her hair, only to realise that something was there. A flower?
Feeling slightly embarrassed, she thanked him. Though she remained silent for a moment, she suddenly remembered about the question she had forgotten about earlier.
“Ne, Suzuya,” she started, and Suzuya gave a soft hum in response. “Why did you say that just now?”
“What do you mean?” Even though Suzuya was slightly aware of what she was referring too, he decided to act innocent.
“You told Yoh that Kanata’s good at goldfish-scooping. You never really acknowledged that before, even though it was the truth.” She pointed out, feeling a little confused. It was a little weird for Suzuya to tell Yoh about that, since he had never told their other friends or peers about it before, even if they had talked about goldfish-scooping during one of their normal conversations. Of course, it never crossed her mind that Suzuya might have said that on purpose.
Chuckling softly, he simply shrugged his shoulders. “I just thought that Yoh might need someone to teach him about goldfish-scooping…” At his answer, Tsukiko simply nodded her head as she continued to stare down at her lap, not putting much thought into it. After all, it seems logical to her.
But that wasn’t the end of his answer.
“Besides,” At the sound of his voice, she lifted her face to look at him, only to find that Suzuya’s face was much closer to hers. Before she could grasp hold of what was happening, she felt something on her lips. Something soft, and warm.
It was only after a long moment, that he pulled back slightly. The same smile was still present on his face, but there seems to be an extra sense of cheekiness behind it.
“… it’s only with the two of them gone that I can pull a surprise attack on you.” He whispered softly near her ear, before leaving another lingering kiss on her cheek.
But he didn’t stop there. His lips traveled further down to her neck, though they didn’t once break contact with her soft skin. His hands circled around her waist to pull her closer to him.
By this time, Tsukiko was already aware of what he’s doing. Even though it felt really pleasant – and a small voice in her head chided her for thinking that way – they’re still in an open area. It was unlike of Suzuya, to be doing such things so suddenly.
“Su- Suzuya…” Pressing her hands against his chest lightly, she protested softly, and much to her surprise, he let go of her almost immediately. Suzuya only pulled back slightly to look at her, his expression was of a disappointed one.
“Do you dislike it? Me doing that to you.” He asked softly, looking her in the eyes. Under his piercing glance, Tsukiko could only turned her face away, blushing. How is she suppose to tell him? That she didn’t want him to stop.
“I… I didn’t dislike it…” She whispered, her voice so soft that she could barely hear herself.
But Suzuya caught that clearly, since they’re so close to each other. Still, he wasn’t going to let her off that easily. “What? What did you just say? I couldn’t quite hear you.” He said, a small hint of teasing under that normal tone of his.
Tsukiko’s blush turned even deeper, as she looked at him. Was he saying that to tease her? The look on his face already said so. “I said… I didn’t dislike it…” She finally got the words out after a moment’s hesitation, in a louder voice, before she buried her face into her hands out of embarrassment.
With a light chuckle, Suzuya even closer towards her. Tsukiko could feel his fingers prying her hands away. He was so gentle, but the sensation of his fingers brushing against hers made her heartbeat quickened. Once he had completely removed her hands away from her face, his smile came into view.
The tip of his fingers skimmed lightly along her cheek, before he let them travel back down, his fingers intertwining with the stray strands of her hair. She could feel a burning sensation left by his fingers.
“So, I'll take it as you like it then?” He murmured softly, but didn’t give her the chance to answer, before he was pressing his lips against hers once again.
Tsukiko was momentarily surprised, and unsure of what to do. But a moment later, she finally responded to the kiss, letting her arms slip around his neck.
Seeing that she was responding to him, Suzuya’s smile grew even wider. Just as he was deepening the kiss, he heard familiar voices coming from the bushes nearby.
“Oi, hitsuji, move over there! I can’t see a thing with you blocking me like this!” Kanata was trying to get a clear look, but Yoh was blocking his view.
“Stop pushing me! And keep your voice down, would you? They’re going to realise that we’re here if you continue to speak so loudly!” Yoh tried speaking to him in a hushed voice, but Suzuya had already realised that they’re there.
Tsukiko heard their voices too, and in a flustered manner, she sat upright, adjusting her yukata frantically. She could feel all the warmth rushing up to her cheeks, rendering her face a bright red. Letting out a soft sigh, Suzuya let go of her, sitting up properly as well.
“Kanata, Yoh, you two can come out now…” Suzuya wasn’t able to hide the displease in his voice, since they had interrupted him and Tsukiko. But as he glanced at Tsukiko, a helpless smile spread across his expression.
“See! It’s all your fault that we got busted.” Kanata pushed the blame towards Yoh, as the both of them left their hiding place with a sheepish grin.
Yoh only sent a glare towards his direction, as he went over to sit right next to Tsukiko. She was still feeling very much flustered, due to the embarrassment of getting found out and… also what Suzuya did to her. She had to take a moment, before she was able to slow down her quickened heartbeat. Even though it was embarrassing, she can’t help but admit, that it felt… sort of nice.
“Ne, Tsukiko, I managed to catch 4 goldfish just now,” Yoh said with a proud beam, lifting the bag before her to show her the goldfish he had caught. It was as if they hadn’t been peeping on them earlier on, but Tsukiko was kind of glad that neither Yoh nor Kanata talked about it. “Come on, let’s name them together!”
Kanata rolled his eyes, as he sat down beside Suzuya. “Tch, that’s nothing big to brag about, you this sheep. I caught 5, you know?”
But Yoh pretended as if Kanata had never said anything, as he peered closely at the fishes. “Well, this one will be called Tsukiko, and this one will be Yoh. The one next to them will be called Suzuya!” As Yoh started naming the fishes, he pointed to each of them while he named them.
“Oh, and the small one over there can be called Kanata,” he said nonchalantly, but in a voice loud enough for Kanata to hear, as he pointed to the smaller fish in the corner.
And with that, the bickering between the both of them started again. Watching them, Tsukiko giggled softly, before she turned to look up at the sky.
Staring up at the night sky, Tsukiko found herself smiling slightly. Seeing the smile on her face, Suzuya can’t help but smile as well, giving her hand a light squeeze. No words were exchanged, but it was nice and comfortable, so there wasn’t really a need for them to do that.
